How to Choose the Perfect Handmade Paper Lampshade for Your Home

The shape of your lampshade affects both the direction of light and the overall look of the fixture. Circular and oval shades spread light evenly in all directions, making them perfect for living rooms and bedrooms. 4-sided and 6-sided shades create a more structured, architectural feel — great for entryways or reading corners. Floor lampshades are taller and wider, designed to anchor a room, while table shades are compact and intimate. The right bulb makes a huge difference. Handmade paper shades work best with warm-white LED bulbs (2700K–3000K) in the 4W–8W range. Avoid anything above 10W — the paper is heat-sensitive and a cool LED is always safer. For a soft, romantic glow, try a filament-style LED inside a plain or circular shade. The paper diffuses the filament beautifully without completely hiding it. For task lighting (a desk or reading lamp), a smaller, more opaque shade will concentrate the light downward.

A common mistake is buying a shade that is too small for the base or the room. As a general rule, the diameter of the shade should be roughly two-thirds the height of the lamp base. For ceiling pendants, the shade diameter should be at least one-third the width of the table or surface below it.
