How to Care for Your Handmade Paper Lampshade and Make It Last
neepun·May 22, 2026

A handmade lokta paper lampshade is a delicate work of art — and with a little care, it can stay beautiful for years. Here is everything you need to know about cleaning, storing, and protecting your lampshade so it keeps glowing like new.
Daily Dusting
Dust is the biggest enemy of paper lampshades. The best tool is a soft, dry paintbrush or a microfibre cloth. Gently brush from the top down, being careful not to press hard on the paper. Do this once a week and dust will never build up enough to be a problem.
Dealing with Spots and Stains
If you get a small spot on your shade, act quickly. Dab — do not rub — with a very slightly damp cloth. Use as little moisture as possible and let the shade air dry completely before turning the light back on. Never soak or submerge a paper lampshade in water.
Choosing the Right Bulb
Always use LED bulbs with a maximum of 10W. Lokta paper is natural and heat-sensitive — halogen and incandescent bulbs run too hot and will discolour or damage the paper over time. A warm-white LED (2700K) gives the most beautiful, natural-looking glow through the paper.
Storing Your Lampshade
If you need to store your lampshade, wrap it loosely in tissue paper and place it in a box — never stack heavy items on top. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade the paper over time.
